âDo you believe in magic?â LÄina asked.
âReal magic?â
âYeahâlike the sun and the moon and the stars.â
âAnd wolves that roam free at midnight?â
âFated love that heals old scars?â
Angelo chewed on LÄinaâs question, pulling off the highway for gas. His fingers drummed against the dashboard as he waited for a station to go free. LÄinaâs ears danced to the complicated beats.
âYouâre a musician?â
âYou can tell just from that?â
She nodded. âI used to play in a band.â
âWhat instrument?â
âGuess.â
A crooked smile broke out across Angeloâs face.
He looked like the type of person who enjoyed these types of games.
Angelo didnât rush for an answer as they waited. He didnât speak when a pump went free. Angeloâs fingers seemed to investigate as they danced across the shiny yellow pumps that read â4.57 Real.â
He continued to look back at LÄina, combing over her tennis shoes, the ribbon in her hair, even the curve of her manicured nails.
âKeyboard,â he finally answered.
LÄina smiled.
âHow did you know?â
Angelo crossed his arms like there was nothing in this world he did not know.
âYou have a beautiful voice. But your fingers are soft. Too soft.â
âNo oneâs ever described my fingers that way.â
Angelo reached over. LÄina held out her hands.
A shiver ran through her as he touched her fingers, turning them toward the sun.
âConsider it a compliment.â
LÄina stared. âYou still havenât answered my question.â
âWhat was your question?â
Angelo didnât let go of her hand.
âDo you believe in magic?â
âDo you believe in destiny?â Angelo asked back.
LÄina shook her head. ââDestinyâ feels too big. Too big to be real.â
âYou see this?â
Angelo extended his forearm and pulled up his sleeve, revealing a small bouquet of flowers above his wrist. The thin stems, tied together with a yellow ribbon, crisscrossed against his greenish veins.
âMy grandmother was a gardener. Is a gardener. That is what sheâd make me say. Her favorite flowers were camellias. Sheâd plant them every May.â
LÄina held her breath.
This was more than sheâd gotten from him before.
Angelo was adept at maneuvering around a question, polite at responding, yet rarely answering.
âThe day she died, I passed a tattoo parlor. I had never gotten one before. They all felt too permanent . . .â Angelo tilted his head. âThe woman who gave me this had yellow camellias on her bench. A thin bouquet with babyâs breath and thorns. Someone gave them to her that morning. She told me the florist liked her smile.â
LÄina watched Angelo intently as he removed the gas pump and closed his tank. She liked the distant look in his hazel eyes.
It reminded her of rain.
âThe artist told me she believed every tattoo she gave was one she was destined to give. I believe thatâs magic.â
Angelo took his seat.
âI believe thatâs real.â
